March Madness means a spike in vasectomies

March Madness has become a tradition in more ways than one.

March Madness is a time for watching basketball games, filling out brackets, and spending time with friends. But it is also a peak time for vasectomies.

"At the beginning of the year, a lot of guys, a lot of families will have that discussion saying, ‘Maybe it's that time to get a vasectomy. We are happy with our family and it's the start of year.’ But by the time you get around to going to the doctor to make the appointment, all of a sudden it's March," said Dr. Naveen Kella, a urologist at The Urology Place.

"It's the right thing to do. The ladies do all the pregnancy, birthing, the baby thing. We ought to take care of this for the permanent sterilization," said Dr. Timothy Hlavinka, also a urologist at The Urology Place.

During March Madness, doctors Kella and Hlavinka say that they perform about 20 to 30 percent more vasectomies.

"It just came together that guys started having parties and get-togethers during March Madness, going to the bars together, ‘So hey, why not have a bro-sectomy weekend?" Dr. Hlavinka noted.

You heard right, a “bros-ectomy.” Why not? It can be a new experience bros can take part in together, or at least at the same time.

"Anytime you have something new done or a new experience, and the vasectomy could be an experience, people say, ‘Hey, I'm getting this done. Why don't you come with me? We will do it together,’" Dr. Kella said.

But if you're worried about going under the knife, The Urology Place can do it without one.

"Usually we don't even use a knife. We have what's called a no scalpel technique,” Dr. Kella explained. “Afterwards, patients will go home. I tell guys just use an ice pack for about 15 to 20 minutes. You can do that on and off a couple times and keep the kids from bouncing on you for the next couple days."
