SAN ANTONIO – The North East Independent School District released a list of thousands of names Monday that it said were received after the district sought public input to rename Robert E. Lee High School.
The school board took name suggestions online through Sept. 25.
"The Board's criteria for consideration of submissions required that the proposed name be that of an idea rather than a person, and that the name should be wholesome and stand the test of time," the district said in a news release.
The community provided a total of 2,443 submissions. Of those, 542 met the Board's criteria.
The district said it had planned to publish all names on the district's website, but decided not to do so because some names contained offensive references and profanity. Instead, the names were released to the media to maintain transparency.
The board has received the complete list, and will consider the matter at their regular board meeting next Monday, Oct. 9.
The name change will take effect after the end of the 2017-2018 school year.
