Two women have been charged with capital murder in the death of 2-year-old Alaina Beauford-Rosebur, according to the San Antonio Police Department. One of the women charged is the girl’s own mother.
Police say that the toddler was the victim of an ongoing cycle of abuse that lasted right up until she died.
Officers arrested the mother, Shari Newman, on Wednesday. She kept her head down and had nothing to say as she was being booked into the Bexar County Jail.
Newman’s girlfriend, Letica Young, is the other woman that’s been charged.
Police say that the mother took the injured toddler to Methodist Children’s Hospital on Saturday but that the girl had already died by the time they got there.
According to the arrest affidavit, the investigating officer noticed multiple bruises on the girl’s head, chest, back, arms, and legs.
The girl’s mother initially claimed that the 2-year-old fell off of a motorized four-wheeler, but a search of the mother’s apartment turned up disturbing signs of abuse.
“Blood on the walls, impression marks on the walls that had looked like someone had been pushed into the wall, along with blood and clumps of hair,” said Sgt. Jesse Salame with SAPD.
During the girl’s autopsy, doctors found that bruising on the victim was fresh and that the injuries were inflicted within hours of the girl’s death.
She also had internal injuries and a fractured skull, caused by force trauma.
Police said neither of the women confessed to hurting the little girl but they did acknowledge she was abused.
