Wilson County Sheriff Joe Tackitt gave an update Monday morning on the deadly shooting in Sutherland Springs Sunday.
Officials confirmed Sunday afternoon 26 people died in the mass shooting at the church in the small town near La Vernia. More than 20 others were injured in the shooting.
The shooter was identified as Devin Kelley, 26, of New Braunfels. He died after a chase involving local residents.
Monday morning, Sheriff Joe Tackitt explained more about the investigation.
“I have a small department, so the first thing we did was call in the Texas Rangers. So the Rangers have been here from the very beginning. There are some that have gone home to get some rest. But, we have had the FBI, we have had Homeland Security, you name it, they have been here,” Sheriff Tackitt said.
The Sheriff said the Texas Rangers are taking the lead on the investigation at this point.
When asked if the shooter, Devin Kelley, was on law enforcement’s radar, Sheriff Tackett said no. “We had no idea who this person was.”
Kelley was killed after a chase involving two young men in the community. Officials said the men exchanged gunfire with Kelley. The two men were not hurt.
The Sheriff says it is still unclear Monday morning whether Kelley was shot by bullets from the two men or if he shot himself.
“At this time, we believe he was probably hit by these individuals, but, there is a good possibility that he did kill himself,” Sheriff Tackitt said.
