University Hospital is one of three San Antonio hospitals where 10 of the 22 that were injured were taken following the Sutherland Springs church shooting.
Officials say that four of those 10 are children and one of the reasons that they were likely brought to University Hospital is that the facility is the only level one pediatric trauma center in South Texas. There are several other level one trauma centers for adults but University Hospital is the only one for children.
The closest hospital to First Baptist in Sutherland Springs is Connally Memorial Hospital in Floresville, which is 15 miles away. Eight of the 10 patients were originally taken there but four of them ended up at University Hospital.
As of early Sunday evening, two of those victims had been discharged but two others remain in the hospital but in stable condition.
Brook Army Medical Center, like University Hospital, is a level one trauma center and received eight victims who were injured in Sunday’s shooting.
Army Brigadier General Jeffrey Johnson released a statement on behalf of BAMC which read, in part:
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. Although we are deeply saddened by the circumstances, BAMC trains daily to be ready at a moment’s notice, whether it’s for a natural disaster, mass casualty, or to care for our combat wounded. We are proud to serve our community.”
