A Smithson Valley High School teacher was arrested after he was accused of having an improper relationship with a student.
The Comal Independent School District says that coach and math teacher Russell Dewayne Hamilton, 27, was initially placed on paid leave when the allegations surfaced in November.
An arrest report shows that the alleged offense happened on October 25, 2017.
Hamilton officially resigned on December 19 after being at the school since 2014, according to Comal ISD.
Stacy Rodriguez has two teens that attend Smithson Valley High School. She is upset that she wasn't notified about the arrest from the school district.
"I should be able to hear this from the district or from the school first," she said. "I shouldn't hear it from the media."
Rodriguez saw the KENS 5 article about the arrest on her Facebook feed.
"I know what the district will say it is a personnel or an HR issue, ‘we can't say the teacher by name.’ Then tell us a teacher within the math department or this department had an inappropriate relationship, ‘we wanted to let you know,’” she said. "There are ways around it, rather than just not addressing it."
The school district reports that there is no set policy that dictates parent notification in these types of situations. And during the investigation process, the school district does not communicate with anyone outside the investigation to protect the rights of the employee.
Hamilton now awaits trial.
