San Antonio – A man is charged with arson, accused of setting fire to his girlfriend’s apartment in a fit of jealousy after finding out that she was seeing another man.
According to information in an arrest affidavit, Joe Anthony Dominguez, 41, confessed to investigators that he used a cigarette lighter to set fire to toilet paper he placed on his girlfriend’s bed.
Firefighters responded to the fire that happened about 10:19 p.m. on March 2 at an apartment complex located on Pecan Valley Drive. Arson investigators were called to the scene.
The woman who lived in the apartment showed investigators messages from Dominguez she received before the fire was set. She told police Dominguez was her “ex-boyfriend.”
Dominguez told police he had been staying with the woman at the apartment for at least 30 of the past 60 days prior to the fire. He told investigators he recently found out she had another boyfriend “on the side” who was released from jail the day before the fire.
He told police he was “deeply hurt,” and took a bus to her apartment and climbed through a window. Once inside, he found letters and other items that showed she had been in contact with the other man for months. He set the fire and was surprised at how quickly the fire spread. He put the letters in a suitcase and left the building. Unable to bear reading the letters, he threw the suitcase in a dumpster.
Dominguez is facing felony charges of arson and his bond was set at $30,000.
