HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – A Harris County deputy is recovering in the hospital after being shot by a man who was being arrested overnight at house on Kiplands Way Dr. in North Harris County.

The more than three hours long standoff finally came to an end around 12:20 a.m. Thursday, after a Harris County Swat Team’s robot was sent in and located the suspect dead with a gunshot wound.

Investigators are still working to see if their deputies shot him, or if the man took his life during that standoff.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office held a press briefing early Thursday morning.

According to a man, who rents a room at the house where the incident took place , the suspect was a disabled U.S. Army veteran who was also renting a room there.

Investigators say this all happened started when deputies went to the home late Wednesday night to investigate a deadly conduct charge from earlier Wednesday evening.

Investigators said when deputies tried to arrest him, he shot one of them in the forearm, while still handcuffed.

He also hit another renter living in the home, several times.

Surveillance video obtained by KHOU 11 shows the moments that followed, where you can see the deputy running out of the house, holding his arm. Seconds later, deputies help the other man shot out as well.

That man’s girlfriend, who was also in the house, but asleep, locked herself in, and got out safely on her own.

Investigators said the gunman barricaded himself in the house before they later discovered him in an upstairs bedroom dead.

One of the renters, who did not want to identify himself says the suspect moved in 30 days ago, and from what they saw, they didn’t show any violent tendencies.

“He seemed like a decent guy, honestly, like I said, it’s just a very tragic situation, and you know I certainly wouldn’t want this to happen in my house, but here it is.”

That renter also mentioned investigators that he spoke to told him. They believe this all got sparked by an incident between the suspect and a woman who got into a confrontation somewhere else.

It’s what he claims led deputies to arrest him at the house he was staying in.

We’re told the deputy that was shot is expected to be okay. He was taken to Memorial Hermann in The Woodlands.

As for the other man who was shot, at last check he was still in critical condition.
