Some dynamic new projects are transforming the landscape on the east side of San Antonio and, on Thursday, business and civic leaders heard an update on the work that will bring new homes, jobs and shops to the heart of the city.

On the northern border of Sunset Station, in between Center and Crockett Streets, a 3.5 acre site is about to sprout into a new multi-family development that will feature 271 apartments.

The working name of the project is Crockett Lofts.

A few blocks to the north, Terramark is building a new development called Urban@Olive.

Three of the 22 single-family homes are well on the way to being complete, and company officials said that these energy-efficient new homes will sell in the $200,000 price range.

"These are two- and three-bedroom homes. They all have small yards. They're patio-type homes," said Charlie Turner of Terramark.

Meanwhile, farther east, in the 2800 and 2900 blocks of Martin Luther King Blvd, 10 new single-family garden homes are on the drawing board.

The project is called MLK Gardens, a joint venture being developed by a group of local physicians and Prestige Homes.

There are one- and two-story models that will all feature underground utilities and rear-entry garages.

Developer Ken Lowe said that the area is ready for change and new growth.

"Nothing's been done there with regard to single-family living in probably more than 40 or 50 years," Lowe said.

Lowe added that a new IDEA School campus is racing towards completion nearby.

Lincoln Park, which is just blocks away, is scheduled to get more than $1 million dollars in upgrades soon.

Just a few blocks south of the Alamodome, an eight-acre mixed-use oasis called Essex Modern City is about one year away from breaking ground.

Developer Efraim Varga said that the complex will include a mix of retail stores, condominiums, apartments and office space.
