SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Police Department said it is mourning the loss of Sgt. Keith Kurtz who passed away Sunday after a battle with cancer.

Kurtz was a 24-year veteran of the department, and SAPD said he spent 20 of his 24 years on 'East Patrol' where he was actively involved in implementing community policing strategies.

Police said Kurtz's funeral arrangements are pending. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Stephanie.

A BBQ plate sale was scheduled for July 21 to help benefit Kurtz's medical expenses. An east-side officer told KENS 5 the event is still expected to go on and benefit Kurtz's family.

Proceeds from a BBQ plate sale are now expected to benefit Kurtz's family.

His SAPD family said Kurtz will be remembered for his great leadership, selfless attitude and his strong will to fight.

Tickets for the BBQ plate sale are $8 and can be purchased at the SAPD east-side substation. It is also expected to take place there at the east-side substation from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 3635 E. Houston St.
