The countdown is on for one of San Antonio's biggest days of giving. On Thursday, there will be an easy way for people to show their support for local non-profits through the Big Give 2017.
The Big Give takes place all day through midnight on May 4. Non-profits have already started to rally around their organizations and encourage people to open their hearts and their wallets as the city gears up for the day.
Last year there were technical glitches in the online giving system, which led to the city missing its target goal of $6 Million. Instead, only about $4.3 Million was raised. Organizers hope that this year's change in the online system will help exceed last year's amount. Donations will help the organizations continue to address issues in the community.
With 650 organizations taking part in the day, there are various causes that donors can show their support for, whether it be for animal care services, expanding the arts, or funding education.
"We're educating the future leaders of San Antonio, of Texas, really of the world," said Jessica Smith-Perry with Great Hearts Texas, which raised the most money last year, bringing in more than $119,000 to go to the education sector. "We have about a $1,200 funding gap per student at Great Hearts. So the money that we raise today is going to go into community investment."
