SAN ANTONIO - A local artist is paying tribute to fallen San Antonio Police Department Officer Miguel Moreno.

Alfonso Garcia created a portrait of Moreno complete with the police department’s badge and logo for Lanier High School, both Moreno and Garica’s alma mater.

“I was asked to do the painting by my cousin who was really good friends with the officer. He went to the same school that I went to and I suppose he grew up in the same neighborhood that I did. I just felt a really deep connection,” Garcia said.

Garcia is incorporating other elements like the San Antonio skyline. He plans to give the painting to Moreno’s family.

In addition to Garcia’s work, Philadelphia Police Department Officer Jonny Castro created a digital portrait of Moreno.

As KENS 5 reported, Castro also paid tribute to fallen SAPD Detective Benjamin Marconi after Marconi was killed in an ambush shooting in late 2016.

At the Pride Chalk It Up event in San Antonio over the weekend, community members added a thin blue line in chalk to their artwork to honor Moreno’s service. The event happened to take place just a few feet away from where Moreno was killed near San Antonio College.

“I think it’s important to create artwork when situations like this happen because it needs to be remembered, and it needs to be focused on. It needs to be displayed and talked about,” Garcia said.

Moreno’s funeral service is set for Friday at Community Bible Church.
